A little about myself...
My name is Megan Flowers and I am the health education teacher at Churchill Jr. High School. I have been teaching health education in the district since the fall of 2012.
My personal background: I grew up in East Alton, Illinois (about 3.5 hours south of Galesburg). I am married to my wonderful husband, Jake, who is the superintendent of the Norwood School District in Peoria, IL. We have two kiddos, Dexter and Layton, and one cat named, Ellie. My husband and I dream of traveling the world and love trying new food places.
Educational background: I received my undergraduate degree in Health Education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the fall of 2009. I then went to obtain my Masters degree in Health Promotion from Indiana University and graduated in the spring of 2012. GO HOOSIERS!
Why health education? This is the question all my students ask me during the first week of having me. Truth is, I was that kid that never had an answer to the "what do you want to do when you grow up" question. I switched my major a few times in undergrad and I ended up taking a college health education course. My experience with health education growing up was not the greatest, however, that first college level health class I took opened my eyes to how much of an impact a quality health education teacher could make in the life of a student. In that college class I learned about topics that not only interested me, but also applied to every aspect of my life; I actually learned skills I could go out and use. Needless to say, I was hooked from that moment on.
So why Health Education? (sorry in advance how many times I use the word " love")
I love the subject matter. I love teaching students about topics that relate to their lives now and will still relate to their lives in the future. I love teaching students the skills they need to make quality decisions regarding their bodies and I love empowering the students with techniques needed to help a friend in need. I can genuinely say that I adore my job and I absolutely look forward to having the pleasure of teaching your child.
If you ever have any questions or concerns about how your child is doing in health class or about the curriculum being taught, please do not hesitate to contact me! I know that the topics that are taught can be a very sensitive topic, which is why if you ever want to see anything that is being taught, I will gladly go over it with you.
